Therapy that Works With the Wisdom of the Body

When Your Body Reacts Before You Can Think
- Your chest tightens during difficult conversations
- Your mind races even when nothing is wrong
- You shut down, overthink, or feel constantly on edge
Many people understand their patterns intellectually, yet their body continues reacting automatically. Anxiety, tension, and shutdown responses are often driven by the nervous system rather than conscious choice.
Somatic therapy works with these responses directly. By bringing attention to sensation, breath, and subtle shifts in activation, therapy helps you recognize patterns as they arise and gradually develop more regulation, awareness, and choice.
How Somatic Therapy Supports Change
Somatic therapy is a holistic, body-based approach that supports healing by tuning into how pain, stress, and trauma are stored—not just in our thoughts or memories—but in the body itself. Many of us try to “think” our way through emotional difficulties, but what we don’t always realize is that our nervous system, muscles, posture, and breathing patterns may still be holding on to those past experiences. Somatic therapy helps us bridge the gap between body and mind—so we can heal from the inside out.
Rather than starting with talking alone, somatic therapy invites you to gently explore what’s happening in your body. Through creative expression, movement, breathwork, and mindfulness-based awareness, your therapist will help you notice and work with subtle physical sensations that may be connected to old patterns, trauma responses, or emotional blocks. This approach can be especially helpful for anxiety, depression, chronic stress, trauma, emotional overwhelm, and feeling disconnected from your body or self.
Somatic psychotherapy has been shaped by decades of work in the fields of psychology, trauma studies, and bodywork. Wilhelm Reich introduced early ideas around emotional tension being stored in the body. Peter Levine developed Somatic Experiencing, a widely respected somatic trauma therapy that focuses on body sensation and nervous system regulation. Pat Ogden’s Sensorimotor Psychotherapy combined somatic awareness with attachment theory, and Stephen Porges’ Polyvagal Theory helped explain how our bodies shift into states of safety or survival. These foundational ideas continue to inform the powerful and evolving field of somatic healing therapy today.

Is Somatic Therapy Right for You
Somatic therapy is ideal for individuals and couples who feel stuck in repetitive patterns that are emotional, physical, or relational and cannot quite figure out why. It is not only for people with a trauma history. Somatic therapy can be deeply helpful for anyone whose nervous system feels constantly on edge or shut down, or who lives with anxiety, depression, emotional overwhelm, frequent outbursts, overthinking, or burnout. It is also valuable for navigating relationship challenges, intimacy blocks, trust ruptures, or that persistent sense that something feels off but is difficult to name.
This kind of somatic counselling can be especially helpful for people who feel disconnected from their bodies or who experience physical symptoms such as tightness, pain, or chronic discomfort that do not respond well to medical treatment. By integrating somatic psychology, somatic trauma therapy, and other body based trauma informed approaches, our therapists help clients access the body’s natural capacity for healing, deeper self awareness, and lasting change.
With the support of a compassionate therapist, clients learn to build body awareness, regulate emotional intensity, and reconnect with their internal sense of safety. Over time this work can increase your capacity to stay present, access choice, and shift habitual reactions that no longer serve you.
Healing Begins by Listening to the Body
Rather than diving straight into problem-solving, we begin by attuning to what your body is telling us, through sensation, breath, movement, and emotion. Whether we’re using tools from art therapy, Internal Family Systems, movement work, somatic experiencing therapy, or mindfulness, your somatic therapist will guide you at a pace that respects where you’re at. This body-based approach helps interrupt survival responses and reconnects the mind with the body, so healing can happen on every level.
Somatic healing therapy isn’t about analyzing what’s wrong, it’s about noticing what’s happening now and building new awareness. When we tune into the body with compassion, we create space to rewrite the story. And that’s where lasting change begins.
