Heal from the Past with the Guidance of a Skilled EMDR Therapist

What if the past still feels present?
You may know that a painful experience is over. Yet your body still reacts as if the threat is happening now. Certain memories or situations can trigger anxiety, shutdown, or overwhelming emotions even years later.
Many people considering EMDR worry they will have to relive painful memories in detail. That is not how the process works.
EMDR therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps the brain process unresolved memories so they no longer carry the same emotional intensity.
Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR does not require retelling every detail of what happened. Instead, bilateral stimulation such as eye movements or tapping supports the brain in integrating the experience.
Developed by psychologist Francine Shapiro in the late 1980s, EMDR has become one of the most effective, evidence-based approaches for trauma healing. It’s recognized by the World Health Organization, the American Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for its success in treating PTSD, trauma, and other emotional challenges.
EMDR therapy can help with much more than trauma. It is also used to treat anxiety, depression, grief, emotional abuse, and childhood trauma. Whether you’re struggling with the aftermath of a painful event, relationship patterns rooted in the past, or a general sense of being stuck, EMDR offers a safe, structured path forward.
At Sun & Moon Therapy in Toronto, we’re here to help you move through what’s holding you back so you can reconnect with the present and feel more grounded in yourself.

Who Can EMDR Help?
EMDR therapy is widely recognized for its effectiveness in treating PTSD and trauma, but it can also help with many other forms of distress. We use EMDR to support people healing from anxiety, depression, emotional or relationship abuse, panic attacks, grief, and childhood trauma. It can be particularly supportive for adults carrying the weight of crisis work, such as first responders, and for teens struggling with anxiety or the aftermath of bullying. EMDR therapy also helps people recovering from complicated relationships, painful breakups, major life transitions, or other difficult experiences that continue to affect their sense of safety and self-worth.
Because it works with the body and nervous system as well as the mind, EMDR therapy often creates lasting change from the inside out. It’s especially helpful for people who’ve tried talk therapy before but still feel stuck.
How EMDR Therapy Works
Many people are surprised to learn that EMDR therapy doesn’t involve retelling your story over and over. Because it uses gentle bilateral stimulation and eye movements, EMDR—sometimes called rapid eye movement therapy—helps your brain reprocess distressing memories in a natural, integrated way. You can experience deep healing without needing to share every detail of your trauma. EMDR helps the brain do what it was designed to do: process and resolve distressing experiences.
After you and your therapist decide EMDR is a good fit, the process begins with building safety and trust. In the first phase, your therapist helps you develop tools for staying grounded and calm—through mindfulness, visualization, or relaxation techniques that you can use both in and outside of sessions.

Once you feel ready, you’ll focus on a target memory while engaging in bilateral stimulation. As you do, your brain forms new associations with the memory. The emotional intensity softens, and what once felt overwhelming becomes something you can think about without feeling triggered or shut down.
The goal of EMDR therapy isn’t to erase what happened but to help your nervous system integrate it so you’re no longer reliving it in the present. The memory remains, but it no longer carries the same emotional charge. The process is gentle and non-threatening, designed to help you heal safely and with very little risk of re-traumatization.
Our Approach to EMDR Therapy
At Sun & Moon Therapy, we are EMDRIA-trained and committed to offering EMDR therapy in a way that is grounded, trauma-informed, and attuned to each person’s unique experience. Our training is rooted in best practices for supporting nervous system regulation and trauma recovery, and we continue to deepen our skills through ongoing education and consultation.
We were drawn to EMDR because it supports real, embodied change. With backgrounds in IFS, art therapy, and somatic approaches, we believe healing happens not just in the mind, but through the body, emotions, and nervous system. EMDR therapy supports that kind of full-person integration, which is why it fits so naturally into our work.
Time and again, we’ve seen clients experience a new sense of freedom, where the past feels less charged, the present feels more manageable, and the future begins to open with possibility.
One of the things that makes our approach to EMDR unique is the option to incorporate creativearts therapy into your sessions. For some people, words alone don’t fully capture what they’recarrying. Drawing, imagery, or other creative modalities can open up a deeper layer ofprocessing. This helps you access and express what the mind and body are holding in ways thattalking alone may not reach. This integration can be especially powerful for deepeningvisualization work within EMDR, allowing healing to unfold in a way that feels natural andembodied for you.
Taking the First Step Toward Healing
Reaching out for therapy can feel like a big step, especially when you’re carrying something heavy. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you get in touch. Whether you’re just curious about EMDR or you’re ready to begin, we’re here to meet you where you are.
When you schedule your free consultation, there’s no pressure and no commitment. It’s simply a chance to connect, ask questions, and get a sense of whether working together feels like a good fit. Most people leave feeling a little lighter just from having the conversation.
Healing doesn’t have to happen all at once. It starts with one small step.
