A Toronto Therapist’s Guide to Your First Therapy Session, From Booking to Building Trust
Choosing to pursue therapy, especially your first therapy session, is both a courageous decision and a meaningful step toward feeling more at home in yourself. It’s completely normal to arrive with a mix of apprehension and anticipation, and often, both at once.
At Sun & Moon Therapy Toronto, we want every new client to feel welcome and informed from the very first point of contact. Below, we’ve outlined what the process looks like, from first reaching out to building a long-term therapeutic relationship.
The Courage to Begin: Navigating Common Pre-Therapy Fears
If this is your first time coming in, you might find yourself wondering things like: ‘What am I even supposed to talk about?’ ‘Is what I’m going through bad enough to need therapy?’ or ‘Will my therapist actually get me?’ These are some of the most common thoughts new clients bring through our door, and they make complete sense.
A lot of people also worry they’ll have to dive straight into their most painful memories on day one. That’s not how we work. You set the pace. We follow your lead.
We understand that walking into your first therapy session can bring up a lot of fear, and we meet that with genuine empathy and care.

One thing worth knowing: you don’t need to be in crisis to reach out. Many of our clients appear to be functioning just fine on the outside while quietly feeling stuck, numb, or overwhelmed on the inside. That is more than enough reason to seek support.
Therapy isn’t just for major life events or long-standing struggles. It’s also a space for anyone working through patterns they can’t seem to shift, navigating a life change, or simply wanting to understand themselves a little better.
And for those coming in with anxiety, for example, part of what we work with together is helping you understand that your nervous system is doing exactly what it’s designed to do. Fear is your body’s way of trying to keep you safe. Learning to recognize that, and gently building a sense of safety from within, is often where the real work begins.
Your First Conversation: No Pressure, Just Connection
Before beginning any clinical work, we warmly encourage everyone to start with an initial consultation, a relaxed, no-pressure conversation that serves as your first gentle introduction to the therapeutic process.
At Sun & Moon Therapy Toronto, this consultation is free, runs about 20 minutes, and is meant to feel informal and easy. Think of it less as an assessment and more as a chance to get a feel for us, ask any questions you have, and see if it feels like the right fit.
The focus of this call is simple: to give you a first sense of connection and help you feel at ease. You’ll have space to ask questions, share a little about what’s bringing you to therapy, and get a feel for your therapist’s personality and approach.
Not sure which therapist is the right fit? That’s completely okay. We’re happy to help match you with the clinician who best suits your needs and what you’re looking for.
There’s no obligation to move forward after the consultation. If the connection doesn’t feel right, we completely understand, and we want you to feel free to take your time.
Welcome to Your First Therapy Session
Once you move from consultation into your first real session, the focus remains the same: helping you feel safe, comfortable, and at ease.
Your first appointment is designed to feel predictable and secure. Whether you come to see us in person at our space in Toronto’s East End Beaches neighbourhood, or connect with us virtually from anywhere in Ontario, you’ll be welcomed into an environment that feels settled and inviting.

During this session, your therapist will ask broad, open-ended questions to get a sense of what’s bringing you in, a little about your history, and what you’re hoping to get from therapy. It’s a genuine, collaborative conversation where you and your therapist begin to get to know each other.
Together, you’ll start to shape a therapeutic plan and agree on a pace that feels right for you. Most therapists will suggest starting with weekly sessions, as this tends to build the kind of momentum that helps the relationship and the work really take root.
You Don’t Need to Have It All Figured Out (Especially in your First Therapy Session)
It’s a common belief that you need to arrive at your first therapy session knowing exactly what’s wrong. You don’t. What matters most is simply showing up and being open. More often than not, the work that unfolds will go much deeper than any label or explanation you could bring through the door.
You’re welcome to express yourself however feels natural. It’s completely okay to say ‘I don’t know why I’ve been feeling so anxious’ or ‘I keep having the same argument and I can’t figure out why.’ Our therapists are experienced in sitting with exactly these kinds of unformed, hard-to-name feelings and working through them gently and at your pace.
The goal is to take the pressure off. You don’t need clarity or self-awareness before you begin. That’s what the process is for.
Healing the Whole Person: Our Approach to Therapy
Talk therapy alone doesn’t always reach the full depth of a person’s experience. Reasoning through emotional pain isn’t always enough, which is why our clinicians take a trauma-informed, mind-body approach designed to help clients feel genuinely grounded, regulated, and safe.
Somatic therapy is woven into many of our sessions, helping clients access the ways that stress and trauma live in the body rather than just the mind. Rather than asking clients to retell their story in detail, which can risk re-traumatization, our therapists gently draw attention to what’s happening physically in the moment: a shift in breathing, a tightening in the chest, a subtle change in posture. This kind of body awareness helps interrupt the fight-or-flight response and builds a deep, felt sense of safety.
We also draw on a range of specialized modalities to support this process:
Gestalt Therapy brings attention to the present moment, helping clients stay grounded in what’s happening right now rather than getting pulled back into the details of the past.
Art Therapy offers a non-verbal pathway for expression and emotional processing through creative forms. No artistic ability is needed, only a willingness to explore.
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) helps clients develop new associations with past experiences, gently reducing the grip that unresolved trauma can have on day-to-day functioning, without requiring a detailed verbal account of what happened.
The Foundation of Healing: Building a Therapeutic Relationship From the First Therapy Session and Onward
The bond between therapist and client is at the heart of meaningful, lasting change. Clinical distance and isolated insight rarely move the needle on their own. What truly transforms is genuine connection, focused attention, and the lived experience of being truly seen and understood.
Our team of therapists brings both strong clinical training and a sincere, heartfelt commitment to the people they work with.
The therapeutic relationship itself becomes a kind of safe, real-world space where clients can slow down and begin to notice their patterns, emotions, and ways of relating. Within that space, there’s room to explore boundaries, sit with vulnerability, and discover new ways of connecting, shifts that naturally carry over into everyday life.
Beginning therapy is an investment in yourself. We’re here to make that process, especially your first therapy session, feel as warm and supported as possible, so you feel comfortable building a strong connection with your therapist right from the start.
