Healthy Communication: How to Talk to Your Partner

Building a Stronger Bond Starts With Better Communication

No matter what your relationship looks like, communication is a healthy, foundational piece. And yet, many couples don’t always recognize it as something that can be strengthened with support — especially when patterns feel familiar or long-standing.

Knowing you can turn to your partner — and feel heard, supported, and understood — in both the good and the hard moments is essential. When communication breaks down, it can quietly lead to conflict, resentment, and a growing sense of disconnection. Working with a therapist can help untangle those relationship patterns.

Here are some ways to maintain closeness while building healthier communication habits together.

Practice Active Listening

The common association with communication practices is the act of talking itself. While that definitely matters in healthy communication, active listening can be equally important, if not more so.

So often, people listen to words, but don’t absorb what the other is saying. Either there are distractions or you’re not entirely interested, so the content of the message can go in one ear and partially out the other.

Active listening, on the other hand, requires practice and entails focusing not only on your partner’s words but also their tone of voice, facial expressions, and body language. It requires more intention and engagement. You two talk, hear each other out, actually communicate on issues, and find a resolution.

Keep Your Responses Respectful

If conversations become heated or when there are elements of disagreement, negative emotions can brew and take over the situation. Anger and upset feelings can come off as aggressive, demanding, and sarcastic.

The best practice to keep consistent is to be respectful in your responses. Remember, you and your partner are on the same team and are working towards the same goal. No matter how annoyed or heated you are, be respectful and keep your closeness.

Avoid the Blame Game

In today’s society, it has become almost normal to try to point the finger elsewhere, whether anyone means to or not. It’s also easier to fall into debating your side with your partner if you two don’t see eye to eye. Conflict will arise, no matter how close you and your partner are.

Blame will only turn into resentment down the road. Instead, focus on honing in on the problem and working together to find a solution. By getting to the root if the problem, it will be less likely to reoccur in future situations.

Healthy communication entails having the ability to express your needs, check in with each other, and listen to the needs of your partner judgment free. This act of intentional sharing with your partner can help bring you closer together and maintain that connection throughout the various phases of your relationship.

Be Honest and Express Your Needs

As you express your needs, be sure to be honest. Your partner isn’t a mind reader. Expression can be useful for determining your goals, aligning yourselves, and realigning when necessary.

It’s also worth noting that you should focus on positive phrases. Don’t use this time to complain.

Have Important Conversations at the Right Times

A giant misstep that happens frequently with partners is trying to talk at inopportune times; in the midst of the daily hustle and bustle is not a good time to have serious conversations. During an argument or tense times, that self expression may not land as planned.

Choose a time that you both can focus and there aren’t a hundred different distractions pulling you away. Make sure both of you are calm and that any disgruntled dust has been settled. For any important conversations, talk face to face unless there’s a valid reason you can’t.
