When You Feel Like a Ghost in Your Own Life

The Protective Roots of Emotional Numbness

You’re here.
But you don’t fully feel here.
You move through your day. You answer texts. You attend meetings. You make dinner. You nod
at the right times.
And yet…
It’s like you’re slightly behind your own eyes.
Watching yourself live instead of actually living.
This is disconnection.
Not dramatic.
Not obvious.
Often invisible to everyone around you.
But inside, something feels distant.

Disconnection Isn’t Random

Most people don’t wake up one day and decide to disconnect from their body, their emotions, or their sense of self. It happens gradually, when emotions felt too big, when stress became constant, when trauma overwhelmed your system, or when being fully present simply didn’t feel safe. In those moments, your nervous system did something intelligent: it turned the volume down. On sensation. On feeling. On the parts of you that were carrying too much. Disconnection isn’t dysfunction — it’s protection. The challenge is that, over time, that protection can begin to feel less like safety and more like absence.

What Disconnection Looks Like

  • Emotional numbness
  • Feeling detached from your body
  • Living “in your head”
  • Difficulty identifying emotions
  • Loss of identity or sense of self
  • Going through life on autopilot

Disconnection isn’t weakness. It’s helped you to survive.

Reconnection Is Not Forcing Feelings

Reconnection doesn’t happen through force, it unfolds through safety and relationship. It begins with nervous system regulation, helping your body feel safe enough to soften.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS) – Gently getting to know the parts of you that learned to numb, overthink, or disconnect, and listening to them instead of pushing them away.
  • Gestalt therapy – Slowing down and noticing what is happening right now in your breath, your chest, and your posture, returning to the present moment.
  • EMDR – Supporting your nervous system in processing experiences that are still stuck in survival mode, so you don’t have to keep disconnecting to cope.
  • Art therapy – Giving shape, colour, and form to feelings that don’t yet have words, making space for creative expression when verbal language feels limited.

Reconnection isn’t dramatic. It’s subtle. It’s the moment you notice a feeling instead of shutting it down, the moment your body feels a little more like home, the quiet moment when a part of you says, “I think I’m ready.” And you listen.

You Haven’t Lost Yourself

If you feel disconnected from your body, your emotions, or your sense of identity, it doesn’t mean you’re gone. It means a part of you has been working very hard to protect you. And when that protection is no longer needed in the same way, something beautiful can begin to unfold. You start to feel again — not all at once, not in a way that overwhelms you, but steadily and gently. Like coming home to yourself. And you don’t have to find your way back alone.

If this feels familiar, you don’t have to rush to fix it. Reconnection is not about pushing yourself to feel more than you’re ready for; it’s about creating enough safety for feeling to return in its own time.

Therapy can be one of the places where that safety is slowly built. A place to notice what’s here, to understand how disconnection once protected you, and to gently begin finding your way back to yourself.
